Charlotte, get ready to step inside the heart of American democracy! The U.S. Capitol Building is where Congress meets to create the laws that govern our country. As we approach this magnificent white building with its famous dome, you'll notice it sits on a hill - this was done on purpose so everyone in Washington can see the "People's House" and remember that the government works for us, the citizens.
Our tour will take us into the breathtaking Rotunda, a circular room with a dome that reaches 180 feet high - that's like stacking 15 giraffes on top of each other! The walls tell the story of America through eight massive paintings showing everything from Columbus's arrival to the Wright Brothers' first flight. Look up at the very top of the dome to see "The Apotheosis of Washington," a painting that makes George Washington look like he's ascending to heaven surrounded by Roman gods and goddesses.
In Statuary Hall, we'll meet bronze and marble "people" from every state. Each state gets to send two statues of their most important citizens. You'll see everyone from inventors and writers to civil rights leaders and even a king! The coolest part? If you stand in exactly the right spot, you can whisper and someone on the other side of the room can hear you perfectly because of the room's special acoustics.
⚖️ 12:30 PM - Supreme Court of the United States (Where Justice Lives!)
🚶♀️ Walk Time: 2 minutes from Capitol Visitor Center
⏰ Duration: 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM (30 minutes)
🎫 Entry: FREE! (No tours, but exterior and ground floor accessible)
⚖️ The Highest Court in America!
The Supreme Court is the most important court in America! Nine justices (judges) work here to make sure all laws follow the Constitution. When people can't agree about what a law means, the Supreme Court makes the final decision that everyone in the country must follow.
What Charlotte Will See:
🏛️ Beautiful Building: White marble columns that look like an ancient temple
⚖️ "Equal Justice Under Law": These important words carved above the entrance
🗽 Statues: "Contemplation of Justice" and "Authority of Law" guard the entrance
📚 Ground Floor Exhibits: Learn about famous Supreme Court cases
How It Works: Nine justices serve for their whole life (or until they retire). They read cases, ask questions, and vote on decisions. Sometimes they agree (unanimous), sometimes they don't (split decision). The Chief Justice leads the court and wears special robes.
Famous Cases for Kids: The Supreme Court decided that all children, no matter what color they are, can go to school together (Brown v. Board). They also protect our right to speak freely and practice any religion we choose.
