🎨 Day 5: Art & Monuments

Charlotte's Art & Monument Adventure! 🎨
"What an incredible day of art and remembrance! I saw some of the world's most beautiful paintings at the National Gallery of Art, including works by famous artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Monet! Then we visited the MLK Memorial where Dr. King's powerful words are carved in stone, and the FDR Memorial that tells the story of a president who led America through tough times. At Ford's Theatre, I learned about President Lincoln's tragic last night. We ended the day walking through Georgetown's historic cobblestone streets and eating the most delicious cupcakes ever! Every place taught me something important about America's history and the power of art to inspire people."

👨🦽 America's Longest-Serving President
This unique memorial tells the story of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who led America through the Great Depression and World War II. What makes FDR special is that he did all this while using a wheelchair - showing that disability doesn't limit what someone can achieve!
Four "Rooms" of History:
📜 Room 1 (1933-1936): FDR becomes president during the Great Depression
🏗️ Room 2 (1937-1940): Building programs to help people find jobs

🐕 Fala the Dog: Statue of FDR's beloved Scottish Terrier
👥 Breadline Sculpture: People waiting for food during the Depression
📻 Fireside Chat: Imagine FDR talking to families on the radio
Important Lesson: FDR kept his disability mostly private, but today we celebrate how he proved that people with disabilities can be leaders and heroes. The memorial shows him in his wheelchair, honoring his strength and determination.
🎭 3:30 PM - Ford's Theatre (Where History Changed Forever!)
🎪 The Theatre That Changed America
Ford's Theatre is where President Abraham Lincoln was watching a play on April 14, 1865, when he was shot by John Wilkes Booth. This tragic event happened just days after the Civil War ended. Today, it's both a working theatre and a museum that tells this important but sad story.
What You'll Experience:
🎭 The Theatre: See the actual box where President Lincoln sat
🛏️ Petersen House: The house across the street where Lincoln died
📚 Museum: Learn about Lincoln's life and the Civil War
🔍 Evidence: See the actual items from that tragic night
The Story for Charlotte: President Lincoln had just helped end the Civil War and free enslaved people. He was watching a funny play called "Our American Cousin" when this terrible thing happened. Even though it's a sad story, we remember it because it shows how much Lincoln gave to make America better for everyone.
Learning About Leadership: Lincoln was a great president because he fought to keep the country together and to make sure all people could be free. His life teaches us about courage, kindness, and doing what's right even when it's hard.
